Tai Chi and Falls Prevention

The practice if Tai Chi (Taiji) has recently become recognized as measurably beneficial in the prevention of fall-related fractures amongst the elderly. Age-related reduction in bone density means that falls result in a substantial and increasing cost to the NHS in respect of treatment and care - not to mention the reduction in quality of life.

Regular practice of Tai Chi develops balance, co-ordination, awareness and proprioception, which all contribute to reduction in the chances of falls, and consequenty improvement in quality of life. Even for the most frail elderly, seated sessions can provide stimulating activity which increases co-ordination and awareness.
